169-Point Inspection
If a pre-owned vehicle is less than 6 model years old and has less than 80,000 actual miles on the odometer, then it's eligible to undergo our demanding 169-point Quality Check inspection process. On Ford F-Series trucks and E-Series vans, only vehicles up through the 350 series are eligible for certification; 450 series and higher are ineligible. Anything found to be below standards or deficient is repaired or replaced using only genuine Motorcraft® replacement parts. Only vehicles that pass this rigorous inspection become Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicles.

Powertrain
This category contains all the hardware and functional components related to the engine, transmission and driveline. The following points are checked:
- Engine starts, idles properly (cold/hot)
- Remote start system operates (if equipped)
- Engine accelerates and cruises smoothly
- Engine noise normal (cold/hot and high/low speeds)
- Check for fluid leaks
- Hoses and lines: coolant, fuel, brake, steering, vacuum, A/C (check condition, leaks)
- Belts (check for wear, cracks, fraying, proper adjustment)
- Wiring (check condition)
- Oil pressure (test with gauge if only warning light)
- Engine mounts not broken/separated
- Cylinder compression/power balance (check if necessary)
- Radiator (inspect for leaks, condition of tubes, fins)
- Water pump (free from leaks or unusual noise)
- Coolant recovery tank level sensor works
- Fuel pump pressure reading correctly
- Fuel filter(s) (change per maintenance schedule)
- Air filter (replace per maintenance schedule)
- Battery type, condition, fluid level, load test correct
- Alternator output correct
- Ignition system (operation/scope)
- Starter operates
- Perform Self Test for all CMDTC (no continuous DTC stored in vehicle equipped modules)
- Perform emission control test
- Engine oil and filter (chane)
- Coolant (level, freeze point)
- Entire exhaust system (including catalytic converter) not damaged or leaking
- Automatic transmission/transaxle fluid
- Automatic/manual transmission/transaxle noise normal (cold/hot)
- Automatic/manual transmission/transaxle operates/shifts normally (cold/hot)
- Shift interlock operates
- Clutch operates (smoothly and with proper adjustment)
- Drive axle/transfer case operation, noise normal
- Automatic transmission/transaxle not damaged or leaking
- Manual transmission, transaxle, drive axle, transfer case, not damaged or leaking
- Universal joints, CV joints, boots not damaged, leaking, or excessive wear/looseness, noise when accelerating or turning
- Oil in air cleaner (possible excess blow-by, bad PCV)
- Water in oil (check underside of oil filler cap)
- Timing belt (inspect condition, change per maintenance schedule)
- Inspect Charge Air cooler for damage or leaks
- 4x4 hub operation (engage and disengage properly)
- Transmission mounts (not cracked, broken, oil soaked)
- Differential/drive axles (not damaged or leaking)
- Diesel pre-glow system operates
- Fuel pump noise normal (no leaks if external pump)
- Pressure test radiator cap and cooling system
- Cooling fans, clutches, motors operate
- Hybrid cooling system for leaks, check level and condition
- Hybrid: Switchable powertrain mount (operation)
- Transfer case fluid, check condition and level (add or change as required)
