Baywatch lifeguards' Ford Escape Hybrids save 5,000 gallons of gas
June 4, 2009
Over the past few years, hybrids have not only proven popular with consumers, but with government fleets. Cities, counties and states were anxious to set an example for gas savings. President Obama just ordered a bunch of hybrids for the federal fleet. Now some of the results of those gas-saving efforts are trickling in.

Los Angeles County has 45 Ford Escape hybrid SUVs for its lifeguards -- you know, the ones of Baywatch fame. With a little help from some of the Escapes, they made 9,000 rescues over the past year. In the process, the hybrids cut the fleet’s fuel usage by 25%. That amounts to more than 5,000 gallons during the first six months of service, Ford says.

Most small cars aren't economical for crash repairs: Ford Focus performs the best
September 4, 2008
Low-speed collisions happen every day in commuter traffic and parking lots. These "fender benders" end up costing car owners a lot of money and aggravation because the bumpers on many cars aren't designed to handle what should be a no-damage event.

In a series of crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently assessed how well the bumpers of 20 small car models would protect the vehicles from damage in low-speed collisions. The worst performers are the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen Rabbit, each sustaining about $4,000 damage or more in a single test. The Ford Focus performed the best, with about one-third that amount of damage in its worst test.

2007
When Americans think of a used car, they usually think of a rolling heap of metal barely fit for the road. "Buyer beware" seems to be the name of the game. But the game is changing, and it's changing for the good. Certified pre-owned (CPO) or "certified used" vehicles are more popular than ever. Now, it's "buyer be aware."

CPO sales, including those by independent dealers, grew 132 percent between 2001 and 2006, according to AutoData. Although certified pre-owned vehicles sold by manufacturer-backed dealers are still a small segment of the total market — about 1.7 million — dealers and industry analysts believe that this portion will continue to increase as the market grows.
